Every summer, temperatures across many Indian cities continue to rise, making access to clean drinking water increasingly difficult for community animals. While humans can seek shelter and hydration indoors, thousands of street dogs depend entirely on the kindness of people or whatever water they can find outdoors.
Unfortunately, many available water sources are contaminated, stagnant, or disappear completely during dry seasons. Construction activities, urban development, and shrinking green spaces have reduced natural water availability, forcing community dogs to travel further in search of drinking water.
Volunteers frequently place water bowls outside homes, offices, and shops, but these individual efforts cannot meet the needs of entire neighbourhoods. Bowls are often accidentally removed, damaged, or left empty because there is no organised system to maintain them.
The consequences extend beyond animal welfare. Dogs desperately searching for water may wander into busy roads, industrial areas, or private properties, increasing the likelihood of accidents and unnecessary conflicts with residents. Many cases reported by volunteers during summer involve animals suffering from dehydration, exhaustion, or heat-related illnesses that could have been prevented with something as simple as reliable access to clean water.
Creating public drinking water stations is neither expensive nor complicated. Similar initiatives have already been implemented successfully by municipalities, animal welfare organisations, and citizen groups across several cities. Properly designed water stations require minimal maintenance while providing continuous relief to countless animals.
These stations can also become symbols of compassionate communities. When residents, businesses, schools, and local authorities work together to maintain them, they promote awareness about responsible coexistence with community animals.
This petition does not seek extraordinary infrastructure or large financial commitments. It asks local authorities to recognise access to clean water as a basic welfare measure and integrate public drinking stations into existing parks, footpaths, gardens, markets, lakes, and public spaces.
Together, we can ensure that no community dog suffers simply because it could not find clean drinking water.
Install durable drinking water bowls or refillable stations in parks, public spaces, markets, bus depots, and residential neighbourhoods where community dogs are commonly found.
Assign municipal staff or authorised volunteers to inspect, clean, and refill water stations regularly to ensure they remain hygienic and functional throughout the year.
Encourage Resident Welfare Associations, NGOs, businesses, and volunteers to adopt nearby water stations and assist with maintenance through community partnerships.
Increase the number of temporary water stations during peak summer months when temperatures pose the greatest risk to community animals.
Launch educational campaigns encouraging citizens to support humane initiatives by protecting water stations and reporting damaged or empty units.
Access to clean drinking water is one of the most necessary necessities for every living being. During hot weather, community dogs often travel long distances searching for water, increasing the risk of dehydration, heatstroke, and accidents while crossing busy roads. Simple public water stations can significantly improve animal welfare while reducing conflicts caused by dogs entering private properties in search of water. Providing clean water is an affordable, humane, and sustainable initiative that benefits both animals and the community.
